Why Email and Phones Still Rule

Adam Engst on why email rules:

"It all comes down to two simple facts: email is based on open standards, and it's the lowest common denominator for Internet communication. Any communication system that wishes to supplant email will need to offer both openness and ubiquity, and nothing available today comes even close."

Gina Trapani says there's a time when shutting down email makes sense:

"If you're looking for a quick answer to a question, a phone call (when the person on the other end picks up) yields an immediate response, but an email could languish unread in ten inboxes. When an exchange involves several back-and-forths, days' worth of email could be avoided with a five-minute call."

Twitter and Facebook might be how many of us communicate these are good reminders that two old stalwarts - email and the phone - are not going away.

Workstreaming in 140 Characters with Backpack

Nowadays, status update boxes are everywhere: LinkedIn, Twitter, Friendfeed, Yammer, AIM, GTalk, Facebook and more. The stream is becoming a de facto way that we communicate with others. However, thinking in 140 characters is also changing how I work. I am now using status updates to workstream

I have dusted off using Backpack as a tool for managing my life. It's improved a lot since I last used it a few years ago. One of their recent additions is the Backpack Journal, which I love. I can update it throughout the day to capture a running log of what I worked on, when. Right now this is just for my own use but Backpack works great in teams as well. Above is a screenshot from my Journal this am. I also update it from my iPhone using an app called Satchel and on the desktop use text expansion software to enter items more quickly. I use codes and phrases to track my time which I refer to when I enter my time reports.

Several of my colleagues are workstreaming with Yammer. This is something I need to explore more, since it's certainly easy to do. Are any of you workstreaming - and if so, how - in private or public forums?

Mr./Ms. CIO, Tear Down This Firewall

When I get started working with a client interested in dabbling in the social web one of the first questions I ask them is this: "what's your relationship like with your CIO?" All too often Facebook, Twitter and lots of other sites that require deep exploration are blocked by corporate firewalls. This means it's critical that companies get their tech leadership on board.

Over time, this may become a completely moot point. The reason? Smartphones, netbooks and 3G services like the Verizon Mifi (once it becomes more affordable) means more workers will start to connect to these sites anyway - and during work time. The best and the brightest, as this AP article illustrates, will do so to get actual work done.

As the boundaries between what's work and what's personal obliterate, more firms are going to have to recognize that social networking has the word "work" in it. And that means it's time for corporate IT to get on the train too and tear down the firewall. Some like Kraft (a client cited in the article) are, but not all.

Don't forget your CIO. Involve him/her early.
