AOL Integrates Lifestreaming into AIM for the iPhone

One of the big things that Facebook brings to the age of streams is instant messaging and presence indicators - the ability to see who is online right now and active on the service so you can chat in real time. I hope that sites like Twitter (and its ecosystem of apps) do the same. My bet is that they will soon tie into IM networks more in the near future.

In the meantime, I am very interested in what AOL has been up to lately in bringing lifestreaming and social content the other direction - into IM clients that millions already use. This isn't just a big user base but they're also mainstream users too. Now it's all coming in the iPhone.

With the integration of lifestreaming into the mobile IM client and the potential to create even more value through location-based social networking services, this entire space is about to get a lot more interesting. Keep an eye on the big IM nets and their massive social graphs. They are sleeping giants that are waking up to the potential here.

Video Interview: Dennis Crowley, Foursquare

Do you play Foursquare? I have to admit I didn't until recently. But Foursquare, which is a mobile social networking site, is growing rapidly. I base this by the number of friend requests I receive (here's my profile). Some like David Armano are wisely asking if it's for real or not. Time will tell. I had breakfast yesterday with Dennis Crowley, Foursquare's co-founder to learn a little bit more. Here's my brief video interview with Dennis.

Touch the Future of the Geo Web with Weather Underground

As I write this item there's a severe thunderstorm warning here in the NYC area. So, naturally, I pulled up the weather on my iPhone. In the process I discovered that Weather Underground has an amazing mobile radar site called the Wundermap that gives you a taste of what the web will look like soon everywhere - geo-sensing and touch interactive.

Simply hit this page in any geo-capable browser. I tested it in Firefox 3.5 on the desktop and mobile Safari on an iPhone. It should not only auto-detect your location, but also allow you to zoom in or out either via mutli-touch gestures (on an Macbook or iPhone) or simply by using your mouse wheel.

Amazing stuff considering this is not an app or Flash-based, but simply a web page. Sure Google Maps does some of this but I found the combo impressive.

Gallery: Google Latitude Hits the iPhone

Google Latitude is now available for the iPhone. You can find it at http://m.google.com/latitude (hat tip to Webware.com for the link).

Below is a gallery with screengrabs I took on my train ride back home to Long Island. The service works as advertised. I could set my location, browse my friends and more. It's staggering how well location based services work in Safari.

It's certainly whiz bang. However, the bigger question is whether Google will gain traction here. Social has never been their forte. And Foursquare seems to be growing rapidly based on the number of friend requests I recieve each day.

Regardless, the collision of several forces - search, social networking, mobile and location - is just getting going. This is just the latest advance.

Posterous Gets All Geo on You

More new features from the Posterous team - Google Maps integration. Just paste a link and it embeds a map. I need to test this from the iPhone next since it also works with geo-tagged photos too.

Thinking about how this might be used more broadly beyond posting. What immediately comes to mind is search. Show me all Posterous community members who have uploaded from the following areas in X hours. Also hoping that as video gets more metadata, we'll see more hyper locally tagged embeds too.

The map below should show you where I am in Chicago. I found myself using Google Chrome on my netbook and then copied and pasted the link into the email. Nice feature!
