Stat: Advertisers Believe in Twitter. Consumers? Meh

Saw this Pew stat (PDF) in my email via the Harvard Business Review and thought it presented a notable disconnect. Some 45% of advertisers say that Twitter is in its infancy and its use will grow exponentially over the next few years. And consumers? More than two-thirds (69%) say they do not know enough about Twitter to have an opinion about it.

This makes me kind of sad because I don't think Twitter is an "advertising" tool. It is a great tool for companies to utilize for participating in the market conversation, but not to just talk AT people. They should consider tools like Twitter as one of the ways to meet the 5 objectives of conversation marketing... Listening, Speaking, Caring, Sharing and Building Relationships. It's such an old-school way of thinking to use every new thing that comes along as a new way to make more noise and "advertise" at people. Consumers are too smart and these days. Those that aren't on Twitter yet might join if they found out they could get easy customer support or simple usage answers or tips or suggestions from not only other users but real, honest caring and sharing and help from the vendors too.

This doesn't necessarily imply a disconnect. If twitter is in its infancy, then wouldn't you expect many people to not know much about it yet? Shouldn't we then conclude that is has lots of room to grow?

Seems normal to me, Steve. If you have several million people using Twitter, it's only a fraction of the public but very important to advertisers who figure it out.

Twitter is like an engine. Suppose you had never see one before and the engine is running and you open the hood. Can you figure out how the engine works while it is running and become part of what makes it work? You can try, but some will burn their fingers. Some will think they can just hop in the car and they will understand it.
