Solid Tips for Managing Your Online Social Life

MakeUseOf has two great sets of tips for staying on top of your online social life, without letting it run you. (Part I and Part II). This one is my particular favorite  - a mind map of your online social life.

(On a side note I am making heavy use of mindmapping these days. It's not mainstream yet and people dig it because, well, it's different)

Buzan's iMindMap is my choice. I got in early with a lifetime of free upgrades. It is a great product. iPhone app should be coming soon.

that's not a online presence mind map, that's a Medusa head - look away now lest you turn to stone! A smarter man would pick maybe one of each of those (at most) and concentrate efforts to have real effect. Otherwise, your just diversifying yourself into inconsequence.

Steve! Great marketing work. You are really ubiquitous.

D'oh - I smell "information overload" here. @Vlad says "ubiquitous" but I beleive you have been "consumed" by nanobots who are surely entrenching themselves in your brain as I write this ;) LOL

Cool steve although I agree with Dave that it is a bit more "consumed" than "ubiquitous"!

"Without letting it run you"???? I don't think any system is going to help this guy. He's being run! Either half of these accounts are dormant, or networking is his 24/7 obsession.

With MindManager, you can tag and include hyperlinks to each social network within your map and quickly access relevant communities systematically.

This is extremely useful when you're leveraging different networks to promote content, researching information, or simply socializing. For instance, if I write a post on GTD, I can filter my map of social networks to the ones that are tagged with GTD. Then, I open networks (e.g. David Allen's forum, Linked In & Other groups associated with GTD) and share links to the post where it's relevant. Or, if I'm not promoting and just want to spend time in a focused community, I'll follow the same steps.

@Michael I need to explore Mindmanager more. It has advanced a lot since I last used it.

Mind maps are one of the most under used visual tools available today. I've started using a mind map dashboard to quickly get to Web sites, local OneNote notebooks, and shared folders that I use a lot.

I'm hoping a few mind maps can replace my bookmarking software, which the developer gave up on a few years ago.

It's a nice post but after doing all of this stuff, who has time for a "real" life? Wow!

Steve, glad you liked the article. The different approaches to and umpteen types of social map visualizations I discovered when researching were fascinating. Really useful, almost to the point where you don't know how much until you actually do it.

That mind-map got my attention: I love them too!

Quite a lot of stuff going on there! I read through both articles and I can see a lot of stuff to help me. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

How about http://www.gliffy.com/ which I like for the authentic flow charts used by engineers and programmers, but perhaps not as user friendly and simple as Mindmaps, as you must design your own.

Interesting to organize and see your connections but how do you see opportunity and take action?

Here is another little social media experiment: http://www.mindmeister.com/24836978/googleoids - a web based map (MindMeister) picturing the Google Universe. The thing is this: it's on the web and it is public and open for each and everyone to contribute to and share with others. Let's see what happens...
